Mąkolin

This town in the Płock district was visited by Kolberg two times with a two-year-gap between the visits. The first took place in 1856; the second in 1858. During both trips he was a guest of the Matuszewski family. In his material he included a concise description of the town:

“This village is a part of the nearby Łętowo parish. There is a manor with a garden on a hill. It was here where Casimir the Great incorporated the town of Płock in 1361”. He wrote more about Bodzanów: “a town by the Mułtawa river, the former estate of the Norbertines of Płock. In 1352 the estate was given city rights by Bolesław, the prince of Płock. There is the parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary erected circa 1300. There used to be a castle too, but it was destroyed by the Grand Duke of Lithuania, Mindaugas”.

In Mąkolin Kolberg collected most of the ‘marital’ songs. Some of the texts suggest that this area was full of misbehaving wives.
