Pokuttia / Carpathian Ruthenia

Kolberg received financial aid from the Academy of Arts and Sciences to conduct research in both Podolia and Pokuttia, yet it was so modest that he managed to finance only his research in one region.

Kolberg came to Pokuttia regularly between 1876-1880. He stayed with Władysław Przybysławski in Czortowiec and with Sofron Witwicki, the parish priest of the village of Żabie. In 1880 he participated in the organization of the ‘Ethnographical Exhibition’ in Kołomyja.

Among other items on the exhibition, there was the manuscript of ‘Obrzędy i zwyczaje na Rusi Pokucia’ [Rituals and Customs of the Ruthenian Pokuttia] by Bazyli Jurczenko, a teacher from Ispas. When the exhibition was over, Jurczenko wrote down for Kolberg the texts of songs and fairy tales, as well as some information about beliefs.

Czortowiec

During his stay in Pokuttia, in the years 1876-1880, Kolberg always stayed in Czortowiec with Władysław Przybysławski, an archaeologist and ethnographer, who provided Kolberg with very good working conditions and helped him in contacting informants.

Ispas

The material of Bazyli Jurczenko, a teacher from Ispas, turned out to be very useful during the preparation of the monograph of Pokutia. Moreover, he prepared a manuscript ‘Obrzędy i zwyczaje na Rusi Pokucia’

Kołomyja

According to the description from 1883 “Because of the similarity of names, some people think that the name of the city Kołomyja derived from the Roman settlement, Colonia; however, there are others who maintain that the city was given its name by the Galician king at the beginning of the 13th century”.
